SIM Cards and Internet in Nepal

Which network to buy, what data costs, how far coverage reaches up the trekking valleys, and what Wi-Fi costs above Namche.

Buying a SIM

Both networks have counters in the arrivals hall at Tribhuvan International. You need your passport and a passport photo; registration takes ten minutes and activation up to an hour.

Coverage on the trails

Everest — NTC works reliably to Namche and intermittently to Gorak Shep. Annapurna — good the whole way round except the pass day. Langtang — reliable to Kyanjin Gompa. Manaslu — patchy above Jagat and non-existent around the Larke La.

Lodge Wi-Fi

Everest Link and AirLink operate satellite-backed Wi-Fi networks across the Khumbu, sold as scratch cards by data volume. Expect NPR 600 for a small card and NPR 2,000 for a larger one. Speeds are adequate for messaging and useless for video.

Frequently asked questions

Ncell or Nepal Telecom?
NTC has better coverage in the mountains, Ncell has faster data in the cities. If you are trekking, buy NTC; if you are staying in Kathmandu and Pokhara, Ncell is the better experience.
Is there internet on the Everest trek?
Yes, at a price. Everest Link and AirLink sell prepaid Wi-Fi cards in most lodges from Lukla to Gorak Shep. Mobile data reaches Namche reliably and appears in patches as far as Gorak Shep.
