Everest Base Camp

The south side base camp at 5,364 m, on the moraine directly beneath the Khumbu Icefall — a tent city in spring, bare rock and ice the rest of the year.

By Maya Thapa

Base Camp is not a viewpoint of Everest — the summit is hidden behind the west shoulder from here. What you get instead is the Khumbu Icefall directly above you, a chaos of collapsing seracs that is the first and most dangerous section of the summit route.

In April and May the moraine holds several hundred tents and the infrastructure of a dozen expeditions. Outside the climbing season there is nothing but rock, prayer flags and the noise of the glacier moving.
