Lobuche

A cold cluster of lodges beside the Khumbu glacier moraine at 4,940 m, and the last comfortable night before Gorak Shep.

By Maya Thapa

Lobuche is functional rather than pleasant: half a dozen lodges on the lateral moraine of the Khumbu glacier, with almost no shelter from the wind coming down the valley. Just before it, the trail passes the memorial cairns at Thukla Pass, built for climbers and Sherpas who died on Everest — the most affecting fifteen minutes of the whole walk.
