Lukla is a working village that exists almost entirely to serve the airstrip above it. The runway is 527 metres long, angled at about 12 degrees to help aircraft brake uphill and accelerate downhill, and ends at a cliff on one side and a mountain wall on the other. There is no go-around.
Flights operate in the early morning, before the valley wind gets up, and are cancelled whenever cloud closes the approach. Plan two buffer days between your return to Lukla and any international flight.
