Namche sits in a natural amphitheatre above the confluence of the Dudh Kosi and Bhote Kosi, and has been a trading post between Tibet and the Nepali hills for centuries. The Saturday market still runs, though the goods now arrive by porter from the roadhead rather than over the Nangpa La.
For trekkers it functions as the region's town: ATMs, bakeries, gear shops, laundry, a hospital, phone signal. Every standard itinerary spends two nights here, and the acclimatisation walk up to the Everest View Hotel at 3,880 m — go high, sleep low — is the most useful half-day on the entire route.
