The largest gompa in the Khumbu, set on a ridge with Ama Dablam filling the window and Everest visible over the Nuptse wall.
Tengboche Monastery was founded in 1916, destroyed by earthquake in 1934, rebuilt, burned down in 1989 and rebuilt again. Afternoon prayers are open to visitors and worth timing your day around.
The site itself is the draw: a saddle at 3,867 m with Kangtega and Thamserku behind, Ama Dablam ahead, and Everest showing above the Nuptse–Lhotse ridge. In late October the Mani Rimdu festival brings masked dances over three days.
