Manang

A Tibetan-style village at 3,519 m in the rain shadow of the Annapurnas, and the acclimatisation base before Thorong La.

By Maya Thapa

Manang is dry, flat-roofed and visibly Tibetan, sitting on the north side of the main range where the annual rainfall drops to a few hundred millimetres. Standard itineraries spend two nights here.

The Himalayan Rescue Association runs a free daily altitude talk in season — attend it. Day walks to Ice Lake (4,600 m) or the Gangapurna viewpoint make the extra night count.
