Pokhara

A lakeside town at 822 m with the Annapurnas rising 7,000 metres behind it, and the staging post for every trek in the region.

By Maya Thapa

Pokhara is the softest landing in Nepal: warm, low, walkable, and pointed directly at Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range across Phewa Tal. It is where you get your ACAP permit, hire a guide, buy the kit you forgot in Kathmandu, and recover afterwards.

Sarangkot, thirty minutes above the town, gives the most accessible sunrise view of an 8,000-metre massif anywhere in the world.
