Thorong La is the highest point of the Annapurna Circuit and the crux of the route. Walkers leave High Camp between 4 and 5 a.m. to cross before the afternoon wind, climbing roughly 500 metres to the prayer-flagged cairn at the top and then dropping 1,600 metres to Muktinath the same day.
The pass has a serious weather history — an unseasonal cyclone-driven blizzard killed more than forty people here in October 2014. Check the forecast, and never cross in poor visibility.
