Overview

Tharpu Chuli — Tent Peak on most maps — is 5,663 metres, standing in the middle of the Annapurna Sanctuary. It is not high by Nepali standards, and that is beside the point: the summit is ringed by Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Gangapurna, Glacier Dome and Machapuchare.

There is no other summit in Nepal that puts you inside the mountains like this rather than looking at them from outside.

The climb

The approach is the Annapurna Base Camp trek — lodges the whole way, up the Modi Khola gorge and into the Sanctuary. From ABC it is one day to base camp at 4,500 m and another to high camp at 5,100 m.

Summit day is glacier followed by a snow slope of around 40 to 45 degrees, fixed on the steepest section, onto a small top.

A note on the gorge

The stretch between Deurali and Machapuchare Base Camp crosses avalanche ground and has killed trekkers. It is crossed early in the morning and closed outright after heavy snow. If a guide says wait, wait.

What it costs

USD 1,900 to 3,300 — the cheapest of the popular climbing peaks, because the approach runs on lodges, there are no flights, and only two nights are camped. The NMA permit is USD 250 in spring and USD 125 in autumn.

Frequently asked questions

Why climb a peak this low?
For where it stands. Tharpu Chuli sits in the centre of the Annapurna Sanctuary, so the summit gives a complete ring of Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Gangapurna, Glacier Dome and Machapuchare. Higher peaks give you distance; this one puts you inside the amphitheatre.
Is it a good first 5,000-metre climb?
Yes — arguably better than Island Peak for a first summit, because the approach is all lodges, the altitude is modest and the technical ground is a single fixed slope. The catch is that 5,663 m still needs proper acclimatisation, and the Sanctuary approach gains height fast.
What about Singu Chuli?
Fluted Peak, its neighbour at 6,501 m, is a far harder proposition — steep, technical and rarely climbed. The two are often mentioned together but they are not comparable objectives.
How dangerous is the approach?
The Modi Khola gorge between Deurali and Machapuchare Base Camp runs through avalanche ground and has killed trekkers. It is crossed early in the day and is closed outright after heavy snow. Take a guide's decision to wait seriously.
When should you go?
March to May and October to November. Spring brings rhododendron the whole way up the gorge; autumn is clearer. Avoid the immediate aftermath of any heavy snowfall because of the avalanche section.
